If you have followed my occasional blogs over the past five years, you will recall that I am a Little House on the Prairie fan, from reading the books as a child to watching the TV series with my own kids when they were younger. I loved the small town nature of that time in history, and the trust and respect people had for each other. Yes, there were conflicts that would arise occasionally but, at its core, it was about people working together to build a community they were proud to live in and raise their children in. It was about doing something good for your neighbor because it was the right thing to do. Altruism, I suspect, was more prevalent during those times than it is today.
In the years since those days, our world and our communities have gotten so much more complex it makes the Little House days feel like a fairy tale, something that is hard to believe actually existed.
But I have a secret for all of you. There is a sliver of those Little House days still in our society today. In fact, there are manifestations of those days all across our country. The essence of those Little House days, in my opinion, are brought to life today through an organization called Little Free Library and their book-sharing boxes!
Little Free Library is a non-profit organization whose mission is to be a catalyst for building community, inspiring readers, and expanding book access for all through a global network of volunteerled Little Free Library book-exchange boxes. Their vision is a Little Free Library in every community and a book for every reader.
Little Free Library stewards provide a book-sharing box to their community and keep it filled with books for anyone and everyone who comes by to take, read, and return or take, read, and keep. These book-sharing boxes build community fueled by stewards doing something good for others, from their neighbors to strangers passing by. It is a sliver of the Little House days alive and well for all to enjoy.
Earlier in 2024, ThriftBooks began a partnership with Little Free Library through book donations and sponsorship of Impact Library Program book-sharing boxes and today we are proud to support Little Free Library on GivingTuesday. All purchases made on ThriftBooks.com today, Tuesday, December 3, 2024, will contribute towards our donation of 1% of our net revenue to Little Free Library and their programs. You do not need to opt in or add extra funds to your checkout. Simply purchase as you normally do on ThriftBooks.com (be sure to check out our holiday gift guides for great book gift ideas) and you will contribute towards our donation. It's that simple.
Little Free Library will immediately put our collective GivingTuesday contribution to work. Already in 2024, Little Free Library has granted more than 430 book-sharing boxes full of books to the communities across the United States and Canada that need them the most. These communities have little to no access to books—public libraries are far away and difficult to get to, school libraries are closed during breaks and summer, and buying books is an unaffordable luxury for many families.
Our shared donation will allow Little Free Library to place more book-sharing boxes full of books in these neighborhoods. These libraries help build community, inspire readers, and increase book access for all—they make neighborhoods brighter, more connected places.
So finish up some holiday shopping with a purchase on ThriftBooks.com today and be a part of our support of Little Free Library. With your partnership, we will bring even more communities together around the altruistic nature of providing and sharing books for all. That will indeed be a GivingTuesday for everyone!
