Book Overview

Powerful Tools for Dealing with Stress

Stress. We all struggle with it. We know it can shorten our lives, age us prematurely, make us fat-yet we can't seem to escape it. One more thing we know is that, ultimately, we're the only ones who can stop stress from taking over our lives. So what are you waiting for? This little book offers ten simple solutions you can put into practice right now to reduce stress.

Based on positive psychology, mind-body medicine, and cognitive behavioral therapy, the ten simple solutions in this book offer powerful antidotes to stress. These practices and stress-rescue techniques will help you to cope effectively with stressful moments throughout your day. Try them and, in no time at all, you'll start enjoying better health and a balanced, more fulfilling life.

Stress is like the weather. Everyone talks about it, but no one does anything about it. That can change if you read this book and take its lessons to heart. The author is an expert in physical and psychology well-being, and she knows what she is talking about. Her good sense shows through on every page, and the book abounds with concrete suggestions not only about how to manage stress but more importantly about how to thrive. I highly recommend 10 Simple Solutions to Stress.
-Christopher Peterson, Ph.D., professor of psychology and former director of clinical psychology training at the University of Michigan and author of Character Strengths and Virtues and A Primer in Positive Psychology

If Dr. Wheeler's 10 Simple Solutions to Stress could be put into a pill, it would be prescribed in record numbers. This book teaches a set of skills that will substantially improve your quality of life and health. I will be recommending Dr. Wheeler's book to my patients and make it required reading for my medical students.
-Meg Hayes, MD, assistant professor of family medicine at Oregon Health and Science University

This is a fine, fine book by a thoughtful, caring physician-a clearly written, well documented, eminently practical guide to reducing your stress, decreasing your risk of chronic illness, and just plain feeling better.
-James S. Gordon, MD, founder and director of the Center for Mind-Body Medicine, and author of Manifesto for a New Medicine

Help yourself

The trouble with stress is that you don't have time to learn coping skills when you are truly stretched beyond your limits. That's why Dr. Wheeler's book can be so helpful. Once I got past the Type A compulsion to read the entire book cover to cover, I realized I could have been nibbling at my troubles bit by bit. "10 Simple Solutions" is written in such a way that you can pick and choose the advice you need -- and the book is packed with useful, proven information. I recommend it.

A well written and meaningful book that not only educates but also provides powerful coping skills for stress and healthy attitudes towards life. As an integrative psychotherapist, I highly recommend this book. Debra Lewis Kaplan, LCSW, LMFT Senior Faculty, Center For Mind-Body Medicine

Stress-be-gone!

Dr. Wheeler has written a neat little book that is big on helping to handle stress. She displays her knowledge and thoughts in ways that are easy to understand. Her book contains many "Ah-ha"'s. Her book does not need to be read cover-to-cover but one can open to any chapter and find helpful suggestions and exercises. It is a thoughtful gift as well as a useful tool.

A Great Resource

As a physician and teacher of stress reduction, this book is THE BOOK for those looking to find a way to reduce the stress in their lives. It is clearly written, concise, authoritative and extrememly easy to use. I recommend it wholeheartedly. Joel M. Evans, M.D. author, The Whole Pregnancy Handbook (Gotham Books 2005)

Speaking as a psychologist...

As a practicing psychologist, I've read a lot of self-help books on stress reduction. This one is different and better. Cutting edge medicine, cognitive therapy and practical coping strategies are combined into concise chapters that do not have to be read in sequence. The questionnaires give you a quick way to increase your self knowledge, and the strategies for coping are practical and time-efficient. These are no case anecdotes and stories, which as far as I'm concerned are simply page fillers--this book says it all in succinct, clear writing that doesn't talk down to the reader. I like how Dr. Wheeler explains the difference between stress and strain, and offers many different techniques for understanding and handling pressure, rejection, anxiety or loss. But her work addresses something bigger: not just what you need to get away from, but what you need to go toward. It's not just damage control, it's about finding your best self in the midst of your fast-paced, demanding life. This book is wisdom distilled into something you can make good use of even at a traffic light.
