Book Overview

This is one of the finest of all the available books on the making of patchwork quilts. The author is recognized as having been one of our country's leading authorities on this venerable art, and in this book she divulges many a secret that will assist you in making quilts of the highest quality.
The book contains over 100 patchwork patterns, with complete instructions for cutting and sewing. All conceivable sorts of designs are diagrammed and carefully described: flower designs, rainbows designs, Irish chains, fish and bird and leaf designs. The book shows you, step by step, all the details of making each kind of quilt: it covers choice of pattern, piece vs. patch quilting, simple and complex quilts, choice of quilt materials, interlining materials, lining and thread materials, cutting and piecing, the applique process, various methods of setting together, quilt sizes, borders, scallops, flounces, valances, straight line and close shell quilting, methods of stamping, perforated quilting patterns, quilting the quilt, putting into frames, quilting in a small space, embroidery quilts, and many other topics.
The book is written in an entertaining manner. The author weaves a great deal of rosy humor into the lining of her instructions, as well as some interesting facts about the history of quilting, quilt materials, patterns, and some really choice folklore about the origin of the highly ingenious names of the patterns: "Monkey Wrench," "Road to California," "Lafayette Orange Peel," "Drunkard's Path," and "Crossed Canoes," to name a few.
The book is not technical in any sense of the word. You can use it to make beautiful quilts provided only that you know the fundamentals of sewing.

Very out dated

By a Quilter

Fine collection of patterns from the 30s by a Quilting Hall of Fame quilter. Ruby McKim inspired a generation.

101 Patchwork Patterns

I am new to quilting and am looking for books that will help me get started. I need clear and detailed instructions. This book is one of the best.

An Indispensable Book for Traditional Quilting

This book gives you accurate traditional patterns -- that is, you make templates and cut each piece separately, and then sew them all together into blocks. There is an excellent variety of patterns, and many are not well-known nowadays, so the experienced quilter need not fear that there will be nothing new to enjoy. At the same time, there is sufficient information for the absolute beginner. This book is from 1931, so of course it is not up-to-date. There is no mention of modern time-saving methods, and there is a certain quaintness to the text and pictures (maids in caps hold up the quilts, and the swastika pattern is presented with no self-consciousness). However, those who like the quilts of the early 20th century will value not only the patterns but also the color suggestions, which allow the quilter to make perfect retro quilts. And there is simply no better quilt book for the price.

One of the best Quilting books ever assembled

This Dover reprint of the classic quilting book by Ruby McKim is one of the best quilting books ever written. The book describes 101 block patterns in both patchwork and applique as well as two embroidered blocks. Scattered among the patterns are eight short, well-written chapters describing how to piece, quilt and applique. Originally written in the late 1920's and early 1930's the instructions are as good as ever and Ms. McKim's writing clear and pleasant. This is an absolute steal at this price. Another gem from Dover.
