For the legions of Paper Magazine fans, and anyone who's interested in Where Style Starts. This stunning portrayal of the last 20 years is a wonderful commemorative look at the life and times of the era. Following introductions and commentary by a virtual who's who of popular culture, 20 Years of Style charts just how style has evolved over the past twenty years, illustrating the huge influence that underground cultures from the worlds of art, music, film, sports and urban street life ultimately have played on mainstream fashion. Laid out by year starting in 1984 and continuing through the present, this star-studded journey cannot be described by words alone. Adding to this visual feast are essays and commentary from Paper Magazine founders and co-editors Kim Hasreiter and David Hershkovits, as well as celebratory tributes to Paper Magazine from dejay and musicologist Moby; rap icon Fab 5 Freddy; artist/designer Todd Oldham; and style historian Harold Koda.

20 Years of Celebration

I adore this book for the conversation it provokes and the inspiration it gives me to run out the door and hit the streets searching for those who celebrate life. It is a great romp through the past twenty years of style, yes. It's really a celebration of those individuals who are innately talented and confident to design for themselves and how culture picked "up" on their groove. What I love the most is those people who are celebrated in the book are in love with the energy of the streets and that the staff of PAPER celebrates their exuberance. They should publish a book a year and not wait for another 20 to go by.
THIS BOOK ROCKS - A MUST-BUY!!!!

This is the BEST book I have seen in years. I spent all night reading the amazing chapters (written by pop icons like John Waters Todd Oldham, Moby, Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon to name but a few) and looking at the beautiful photographs. Any style/music/pop culture fan will worship this book. Paper is a guidebook for what's hot and new and this gem of a book re-visits 20 years of trends from hip-hop bling to subversive drag divas to skateboarding to label mania. If it happened on the street or underground, Paper was there to cover it BEFORE it was in the malls or on the runway. The book has sexy and stunning images of a roster of celebrities like Bjork, Beck, Chloe Sevigny, Gwen Stefani, Lil' Kim and clothes by design stars such as Tara Subkoff (of IOC), Isaac Mizrahi, Geoffrey Beene, Jean Paul Gaultier, As Four... The list goes on. This is my favorite book of the year and I plan on giving it to lots of my (lucky) friends. A Five Star coffee table winner!
PAPER MAGAZINE; 20 YEARS of GENIUS
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 20 years ago
The PAPER editors certainly know their pop culture stuff better than anyone on this planet. They are first and fearless showcasing the new; aside from brilliant, budding artists, young fashion designers, start-up bands and emerging actors, they are vigilant about keeping abreast with the "old guard originals" that most publications, in their usual fickle way, cast off. '20 Years of Style: The World According to Paper' is like a gigantic flip book documenting the best of the best in pop culture. Flipping through the book is fun because of the endless vibrant and colorful images but one must peruse each carefully edited and designed page to appreciate the talent. The insightful and hilarious essays by PAPER gurus such as Pedro Almodovar, Kim Gordon, John Waters and Moby are one of a kind. I especially recommend this book for those "who were there*" and those who would like to have "been there" or even for those who might "be there" in the future. Anyone who loves creativity, fun, originality and life style will adore this book. A terrific read and beautiful coffee table book. A collector item for sure. * New York City
