The 'Polish Jazz' series consists of 76 LP's released by Poland's state-controlled Polskie Nagrania Muza label between the years 1965 and 1989. 76 Records assesses each album and provides a list of 21 of the very best. The series was reactivated in 2016 and Muza, now owned by Warner Brothers, has added further volumes which are considered in the 'Postludium'. Polish Jazz is a remarkably diverse collection of jazz-related musics, ranging from New Orleans revivalism to fairly approachable free jazz. As well as providing an account of the music itself, 76 Records looks briefly at the contexts and circumstances that enabled the series to appear in the first place, in a country where, for a period of time at least, jazz was outlawed. The book is aimed at newcomers to Polish jazz as well as experienced listeners who may not have heard all the records in the series.
