On her way to market Jenna makes four new friends. Along with Baby Elephant, there's Robin, who thinks Jenna has a very silly beak; Fly, who wonders where her hundred eyes are; and Goldfish, who thinks she has very goofy gills. Kirkus has written that "the power and grace in Schwartz's spare style and language lies in the fact that she never condescends to young readers--she just compares notes." Here she once again completely and convincingly captures the world of a child in a beautiful and winning picture book about . . . a beautiful girl.
My little girl (2 1/2) picked the book from the library and ever since we HAVE had to read it every night before bed, she also wants to sleep with the page open where all the animals say good night. She recites most of the lines and we really enjoy reading it to her. I am ordering a new one today!
Beautiful Girl! Beautiful book!

We love this book! In it a little girl named Jenna is on her way to market when she meets some animals (they're so cute!) who think she's silly because she isn't just like them. Jenna, in her perfectly matter-of-fact manner sets them straight, telling them who she is and what she can do. Way to go, Jenna! The animals are duly impressed and ask to join Jenna on her walk. Who wouldn't want to join Jenna? She's straight-forward and thoughtful too: When they reach the market, she buys each animal a well-chosen treat. The book closes with a cozy bedtime scene. I think you and your child will enjoy reading A Beautiful Girl over and over at bedtime, laptime, any time. It's a keeper!
