This wonderful gift book covers the most exciting, innovative period in history, featuring everything from the invention of the vacuum cleaner and bra to the splitting of the atom and the first computers. Shirley Hughes' rich narrative paintings and finely observed line illustrations are interwoven with fascinating details, capturing the atmosphere of the era. Stunning double-page spreads offer poignant snapshots of life, from an elegant Edwardian picnic to afternoon tea in the trenches during the First World War. Each spread is followed by a 'scrapbook' of the times, featuring fascinating details about domestic life and the events and innovations that shaped the modern world. This is an intimate book of stories within stories, told from the author's own personal experience.
this is a wonderful book! I used it as "another reference" for a talk I gave to a large women's literary group entitled," Woman Illustrators of Children's Books". Shirley Hughes does endearing and heartwarming work ----- ask most any picture reading Mom and Dad not to mention their lucky children. This book took you from Ms. Hughes's childhood (it is basically an autobiography) through to the present concerning her start in illustrating and inserted along the way are typically wonderful double page Shirley Hughes illustrations covering the time span from approximately 1927 until now. Delightful! Especially when you grew up in that timeframe yourself! I'm ten years younger but experienced much the same history. A delightful read and the illustrations alone make it a book to treasure. Now what I REALLY want is one of her prints-----I'm saving my pennies!
