A Goose Named Gilligan is the true story of a beautiful, untamed river, a man who cherishes it, and a most extraordinary goose. When the Wabash River starts receding, Jerry rescues the exposed river mussels from hungry raccoons. He soon discovers another threatened creature: a beautiful wild goose caught in a fishing line. Unable to fly, the goose will surely drown unless Jerry intervenes. Once freed, grateful Gilligan follows Jerry home, but the man know that wild creatures should live in the wild. The way the goose resolves the dilemma shows how conflicts can be solved creatively. "The goose was struggling to get away, but the more he fought, the worse it got. His feet and wings were wrapped tight in the lines, and the hooks were caught in his feathers. The float was hanging from his neck, and if it hadn't been so serious, Jerry would have laughed out loud." -- from the book
Here is the true story of a wild river, a man who loves it, and an unusual goose who decides upon a new home. Jerry is on a mission to rescue a fading river from ecological disaster: caught in the middle of disaster is a goose whom he rescues - and who becomes a loyal friend. A Goose Named Gilligan reads like fiction with all the drama - and the realism backed by a true event.
GIlligan Goose is GREAT!

After hearing this story from the Riverlorian himself, I was looking forward to seeing and reading it in print. It brought back the memories of this amazing sojourn I heard almost a year ago on the Delta Queen. I've ordered 3 for Christmas gifts but probably can't wait that long to share them with my neices and nephews! It will be fun to tell them I know the author. The illustrations are perfect compliment to this ongoing saga. Animals instincts are uncanny; when least expected and most deserved, they reciprocate and surprise in most unique ways as Gilligan did!

I had the pleasure of riding on the Delta Queen Steamboat last year where the author, Mr. Hay is a Riverlorian. He told the story about Gilligan Goose. I have not read the book yet but the heartwarming story was wonderful. Jerry Hay is a great storyteller so I'm sure the book will be great, as well. The incredible thing about the story is that Gilligan is a real goose and the story he told is true. I am ordering copies for myself and each of my grandchildren.
