Reminiscences of an Italian Colonial Official

Had Kipling been Italian, he would've written: 'Oh North is North and South is South, and when they get it on, ah! The drama! The tragedy! The magic!' Supposedly the title episode inspired Bowie to write "Heroes"; it's a story told at both second AND third hand about a lone Italian official who becomes the lover of an Eritrean girl whose other lover is a dolphin. Afterwards the young engineer returns to Italy knowing the rest of his life will be prosaic but forever affected by his experience of a different way of understanding the world. Picture the Major sitting in his rattan chair at the club, sipping his whiskey & soda, saying: "Well the natives were rather quaint: I understand 'em, y'know, but 'there's more in Heaven and Earth', eh?"
