This beautifully illustrated historical atlas explains the geography of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It is an infant country compared to the long history of the region. Through the use of historic and new maps, students will discover that the ancient history of the UAE is found largely in the evolution of the Arabian Peninsula and the rise of Islam.
This wonderful little book is part of the Historical Atlases of South Asia, Central Asia, and the Middle East series (that's a mouthful!), which gives the reader excellent introductions to a number of countries. This book traces the history of the United Arab Emirates from antiquity, through to the Persian Gulf War and the 1991 Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI) scandal. Along the way, the reader is treated to many colorful pictures and highly informative sidebars. Overall, I found this to be an excellent introduction to the UAE. Indeed, though the book is aimed at the younger reader, it is so concise and informative that any reader will get a good idea of where the UAE came from and what kind of a country it is today. This is an excellent book that I highly recommend.
