A compelling story about civilian POWs in the Philippines

A Lovely Little War: Life in a Japanese Prison CampThrough the Eyes of a Child I applaud Lorenzen for finding the inspiration to record his experiences and memories of life in the Santo Tomas internment camp, as well as those of his life before and after imprisonment. The plight of civilian POWs in the Philippines is unknown to most Americans now but this book brings it vividly to our attention. It's a fascinating record, and made all the more interesting by including the story of the author's older brother's flight from the Japanese in China to end up in intelligence with a Flying Tiger unit.

A Lovely Little Book

Angus Lorenzen gives the reader a unique view of Work War II because he presents the events in which he took part from a child's point of view. While the adults around him were surely terrified, young Angus saw most of his time spent in the internment camp as a great adventure. Reminiscent of the film "Hope and Glory," this book tells the story of the Japanese invasion of the Philippine Islands from a personal perspective. This is a part of the history of that war of which I was woefully ignorant until reading the book. In the interest of honesty, I must confess that I worked with Angus, or "Andy" as we knew him, many years ago. At the time, I found him to be one of the nicest gentlemen in the company. After reading his story, I am even more impressed with the man. His is a story that was begging to be told, and thank goodness it now has been. The writing is excellent, so the reading is a sheer pleasure. I highly recommend this book.

Highly recommended reading for World War II history buffs

Sometimes being held against your will isn't so bad. "A Lovely Little War: Life In a Japanese Prison Camp Through the Eyes of a Child" is the reflections of an Englishman who was interred by the Japanese during World War II when he was only seven years of age. A unique perspective on one of the darkest times in human history with much reflection from Lorenzen offering new insights on the war at large and the Japanese people, "A Lovely Little War" is highly recommended reading for World War II history buffs for bringing something new to the table.

Highly Engaging Reading

This is a well-written, compelling story. The author writes from his memories as a young boy interned as a prisoner in the Philippines during WWII. Mr. Lorenzen's exceptional recall of the events before, during, and after his internment present an illuminating picture of not only the atrocities of war-time crimes, but also the beauty and inherent strength of the human spirit, -- namely the intrinsic blessing of resiliency. The author did extensive research in writing this story. Mr. Lorenzen artfully wove historical facts with his personal recollections and perceptions in an intelligent, interesting, and engaging fashion. Once you begin, you will not want to put this book down.

Little known WWII history not taught in schools.

"A Lovely Little War" by Angus Lorenzen is one of the best books I have read about children who are prisoners of war. In his book, Mr. Lorenzen, describes his experiences as a child who was a POW held by the Japanese during WWII at Santo Tomas in the Philippines. It is a little known history of this time which is not taught in schools but should be.The read is interesting and well written with underlying questions which captivate the reader, "Who are these children?" "What could possibly happen next to them?" "How did they get there in the first place?" It is appropriate for plain good reading or as a book to use in the classroom.
