As the daughter of a German ambassador who plotted against Hitler, Fey von Hassell was considered a traitor. Her sons were taken from her and the SS imprisoned her in the death camps. When she was finally freed, the struggle to find her children began . . . . Thrilling . . . poignant.--Publishers Weekly. Photographs, letters, and diary excerpts.
A friend loaned me a paperback of this book quite a few years ago. I think this is the fourth copy I've purchased as I've shared the others with friends. The story of this woman's quest to find her children is beyond moving. World War II happened a long time ago, and reminders of anguish and sorrow are essential if we are not to repeat history. This is a great read, and I defy anyone not to cry at the end. I just wish someone would make the movie, preferably with Meryl Streep in the lead!
Mother's War

Fey Hassall and her son-in-law, David Forbes Watt have brought to light an extraordinary tale of WWII. The Italian-German Diplomatic linkages, the SS, concentration camps, the mother's frantic efforts to find her two sons after escaping from the SS marches between concentration camps is a riveting--and true--saga of great courage and determination.
