Thaddeus Lowe, born in 1832, rose from modest beginnings to become a cobbler apprentice, stage magician, aeronaut, organizer of the Union Army's Civil War Balloon Corps, inventor, businessman, and holder of numerous patents. In 1887, he moved to California, where he built a 24,000 square-foot mansion, founded the Citizens' Bank of Los Angeles, and built the fabulous Mount Lowe Railway and resort complex above Pasadena Then he went broke.By 1899, his fortunes declined, he went bankrupt.
