A story of forbidden love in the last days of WWII. The narrator, a 17 year old german girl called Regine Martens, tells her story in the last week of January 1945. By then she has been in hiding from the Nazis for four months. In her words, "I want us to lose, though I dread the end. What wil our victors do to us? Everyone hates us. We've done so much to then and they will take their revenge ... "I want us to lose the war. Four months ago - if I had heard those words somewhere four months ago I would have gone to the police." Until four months ago Regine had been a loyal supporter of the nazi regime, and had believed their propaganda about other races being subhuman. Then she was forced to rethink everything she had believed. This book can bring to life for you the viewpoint of german people, particularly young adults, living under the nazis in the last days before their final defeat. It also shows you something of the viewpoint of the victims of the nazis, both germans and others. Much of the book can be a bit depressing: it is not a light read or something to pick up your spirits. But it is a very powerful and moving story.
