Anthropologist Olivia West is on a desperate mission to find her missing best friend, Emma Martin.

Her death was blamed on wild animals, but Steven, still grieving, is convinced that it was a cover-up. He's certain the answers lie hidden in the misty, foreboding forest surrounding the town.

Reluctantly, Olivia and Steven team up, their mutual mistrust soon sparking an undeniable attraction. As they face off against shadowy figures and confront secrets that defy reason, their search for truth pits science against belief-and each other.

Enter Sheriff Noah McCracken, Heaven's Bottom's mysterious lawman, whose family has safeguarded the town's secrets for hundreds of years. Olivia and Noah share a distant past, but years of separation have turned familiarity into suspicion, even as an undeniable and potent chemistry flares between them. When Olivia demands answers, Noah warns her to back off-or face arrest. Yet he, too, is drawn to her, complicating his loyalties and igniting a rivalry with Steven for her affections.
