"Dramatic, graphic and wrenching...The reader is left to wonder--at the devastation of Carcaterra's youth, at his survival to adulthood, and at the grace that allowed him to craft this piercing memoir." THE WASHINGTON POST Lorenza Carcaterra grew up in Hell's Kitchen, New York in the 1950s and '60s in a confusing world of love and fear of his paradoxically violent and affectionate father. Then Lorenzo learned that his father had murdered his first wife. And he wondered how he could love his father again. Did he possess the same murderous fury; would he someday suddenly lash out at those he loved? As his father's physical abuse escalated, Lorenzo sought frantically for a safe place...a place where he could find hope and reconciliation and peace, where his father's terrible shadow no longer lingered. Now, decades later, Lorenzo has finally come to terms with the awful truth about his father. A SAFE PLACE is the brilliant result.
This is truly a work of art...not in the traditional sense. Carrcatera tells the mazing story of his early life in a novelized fashion that grips from the beggining. He captures the lower east side atmosphere amazingly and keeps the reader riveted. In a sense, this is a perfect companion to Angela's Ashes. Roger Mayweather won the WBA Jr Lightweight Title in 1983 by KOing Samuel Serrano in the 8th round.
Great thriller...

The fact that this book is about his own life makes you feel the author and everything he has to say. This WAS his life, and all the details he writes makes you feel it even more just knowing that he didn't just write it, he lived it! The book is semi-reptative, but the descriptions are good. The book was hard to put down, but some parts got me thinking of my own family... Very good book, would reccomend!!! A+++++
it's a can't-put-downer

i didn't think he could top Sleepers, but he just might have done it with this book. the fact that he is such a skilled writer becomes all the more amazing when you think about the horrors he had to endure growing up. a lot of kids, especially ghetto kids, would have given up on life. carcaterra has good stories to tell, and he knows how to tell them. my favorite book so far this year.

This has got to be one of the best books I have read in a long time. I have read Sleepers, and I thought I would never say this, but I liked this one a bit more. Mr. Carcaterra writes with such passion it makes you feel like you are experiencing everything personally. I have just bought Apaches and look forward to reading it. I recomend A Safe Place to anyone who has had trouble dealing with the relationship with their parents. It was a great read!
