18th-century doctor Adam Bascom investigates the death of a 'hunting squire'. Adam Bascom is asked by his brother, a local Justice of the Peace, to look into the death of well-known 'hunting squire' and country character Sir Jackman Wennard -- rake, racehorse breeder and family tyrant. When what looked like a riding accident turns out to be murder, Adam has to reconstruct every step of Sir Jackman's last morning to get at what happened. The answer turns out to be anything but simple, drawing in eloping lovers, furious villagers, cunning poachers and a spate of local highway robberies.
