A pictorial view of the Separatist community of Zoar The community of Zoar has been a tourist attraction since it was founded in 1817, due in part to its uncommon experiment in Christian communal living, its German heritage, and its location on the Ohio & Erie Canal. There is an unusually rich photographic record of the community and its people as well as many descriptions and comments by writers who wished to share their impressions of the Old World town. Today a restored village with a ten-museum complex operated by the Ohio Historical Society, Zoar has consciously maintained its German roots. Zoar continues to attract the curious individual, the traveler, the day-tripper, and the magazine and newspaper writers of the day.

was a most singluar religious community. German Heritage in Origin, the Zoarites built a sustaining communal soiciety in Tuscarawas Country, Ohio and flourished there as a community until the end of the 19th century; when they disbanded. The Ohio Historical Society owns over half of the remaining original buildings that the Zoarites built and has lovingly restored them to their original beauty. This book documents the story of Zoar and the people who lived there. Beautiful black and white pictures show the rich architectural heritage and glimpses of the original people of this community. I owned a historic home in this village for several years. If you have time to visit this historical site it will be well worth your time. I highly recommend this book.
