Book Overview

In a quiet village far from the noise of Victorian London, Sydney Silchester lives the life of a recluse led by two passions: privacy and honey. He gives up the former only when his stores of the latter run low. But when his honey supplier is found stung to death by her hive, the search for a new beekeeper takes Sydney to Mr. Mycroft, a brilliant man who has retired to Sussex to take up precisely this occupation, and who shares many traits with the great detective, Sherlock Holmes. Upon hearing of the tragic death of the village's other beekeeper, Mycroft, himself no stranger to crime-solving, immediately senses the bloody hand of murder. But what villain would have the mad intelligence to train an army of killer bees? With Sydney at his side, Mycroft embarks on a life-threatening search for the perpetrator of this most diabolical crime.

Hailed by author, critic, and famed Sherlock Holmes scholar Christopher Morley as the only worthwhile continuation of the Holmes novels, A Taste for Honey is an engaging and terrifying mystery that proves enjoyable even to those with little to no knowledge of Doyle's characters.

A solid and very recommended read that should not be ignored

It's obvious there's evil in the world, but why? There is the question. "A Taste for Honey" is the story of killer bees and the man who has trained them, and the unknowing man who has stumbled into it and is left wondering why. Combing zoology, mystery, and psychology for a highly unique story, "A Taste for Honey" is a solid and very recommended read that should not be ignored.

A TASTE FOR HONEY

Here are several brief endorsements for A TASTE FOR HONEY: Roger Johnson (2009) "A Taste for Honey by H. F. Heard is a welcome new edition of an unusual and rather brilliant detective novel, first published in 1941." Peter E. Blau (2009) "It is grand to have the book back in print as the first in 'The Mr. Mycroft Commemorative Series'". Boris Karloff "I thought I knew all the tricks of the horror trade but I never expected to have my hair stand on end when a bee flew in through an open window...A triumph of ingenuity and horrific simplicity." Newsweek "One of the ten best mysteries of all time." Christopher Morley "...the most original and enchanting crime story of the year." Will Cuppy in The New York Herald Tribune A veritable triumph of modern mystery...packing plenty of horror." Rex Stout "It's an astonishing performance." New York Times Book Review "Slow-moving, whimsical, somewhat weightily allusive, this tale is definitely caviar to the general; in a sense, it may be called a bookman's book." Cover copy from the 1964 Lancer edition "...one of the most fiendishly ingenious murder methods ever devised." Vincent Starrett "Terrifying...perfectly done...The most original contribution in many years."
