As an elementary teacher for 32 years I watched Indiana's educational system change with the times. Most early changes were positive changes and those that had a negative impact on students were abandoned. Teachers were once consulted and helped determine what was taught in our classrooms. Today's changes are mandated by people who sometimes have little educational backgrounds. Today teachers have little input into what is taught to Indiana students. It seems to me politicians, administrators, and the news media are discussing changes made in Indiana schools, but no one has bothered to ask teachers, the people who are directed to implement the changes, how they feel about teaching and the learning that is taking place in our state's schools today. I hope my experiences in the classroom will help people of Indiana understand how education has changed in our state from 1979 to 2011. The names used in this book have been changed, but I have made every effort to accurately record the experiences discussed in the book and my thoughts on those event as I saw things unfold during my teaching journey.
