A Tourist in Uniform
Art Schmitz, an American World War II veteran born and raised in Milwaukee, tells the story of his time in the war. Including the introduction and the prologue, this story covers a time span of better than fourteen years, from approximately 1932 to 1946. It is the story of the gradual and uneven progress of Art's maturity as he moves from a sheltered home life to the relative freedom of manhood that he experiences during the war. The story recounts the satisfaction of his wanderlust as he visits thirteen different states, only seven of them being military settings, in his time as a soldier in the United States. He continues to travel extensively while serving his country abroad in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, France, Belgium, Germany, and Austria. Finally, with the war over, he experiences returning home and the ensuing celebration and reunion of his family, and the realization of a new age of peace.
