I am sorry that this book is out of print. all of Brenda Jagger's books are wonderful, but this is possibly the best. Claire, a WWI widow who married "up" just before her husband left for war, finds herself having to cope as a young widow with her dead husband's family and her own mother and stepfather. The book traces her learning to be her own (competent) person, and her difficult but ultimately satisfying romance. My description does not do it justice, it is a wonderful, wonderful book.

If you love Brenda Jagger as much as I do, A Winter's Child is an absolute must for your library. Set in Yorkshire at the end of WWI, you will adore the main characters, the young widow Claire; her sister-in-law, Polly; and all Claire's suitors. Claire lives her life by her own rules, and I cheered her on from start to finish! But, even in the end, Brenda Jagger completely surprised me with her heartfelt ending to the story. Buy!
