Son and daughter of diplomats in Cairo, the gentle Serena Pasha and Mark Holt are good-looking and privileged, growing up in a magical world of champagne breakfasts and midnight picnics at the pyramids. Their lives entwined since childhood, they grow ever closer as adults. Yet Serena's hand has been promised not to Mark, but to his brother, Greg. However, as the Second World War speeds closer to Cairo, a terrible accident gives these young lovers a second chance - and with this chance comes terrible dangers. Egypt is threatened not only by the German army but by nationalist forces within Cairo determined to end the British occupation at any cost. The country torn apart, and with enemies on all sides, Mark and Serena's love is tested to the limit.
"This was an excellent book! A lot of historical truths and very well written. I love all Noel Barber's books,he tends to combine historical facts with fiction and weaves wonderful stories...It could be because he used to be a journalist and all his books go through a wide range of cultures.I also loved his book 'Tanamera' which was a beautiful love story and was made into a television series..."

Excellent historical background, very interesting for anyone interested in Egypt of the first half of the 20th century. Enjoyable, easy to read story put in perspective by the historical events surrounding the characters over the years. It's a thick book but I was sorry when I finished reading it.

SAKKARA is the very best novel that I have ever read.In fact I read it twice. SAKKARA has the entire spectrum, adventure interwoven with romance. This is the novel that I wish I'd written.
One of my best ever books

I agree with the previous review, except for 5 stars. This book is good enough to re-read every few years, in my opinion. It is a riveting story of love through difficult and facinating times. Well worth reading, not a "romance" novel.
Sweeping historial romance from 1919 through 1952

Sakkara, now out of print, is an engaging story of a man and woman from two separate cultures growing up together as neighbors in a swiftly changing Egypt. The sweeping historical romance begins in Egypt in 1919 and spans through the independence of Egypt. If you can find it-read it!!!
