Abe Lemons won 599 games and produced several All-Americans as one of the country's premier major college basketball coaches from 1955 to 1990. Along the way, at Oklahoma City University, Pan American... This description may be from another edition of this product.
Grew up with Abe Lemons . . . well, during the time he was coaching. There was so much to remember . . . his great teams, his wit, his story of growing up in small town Oklahoma. He was a real "magician", taking farm boys, rejects from other programs and making them into competitive basketball teams. It was amazing how he took his OCU team and hustled to get a schedule and equipment and give those boys an education they might never have had. I was reminded of some of his quotes (especially like the one he made to Howard Cosell, "You may be something in New York but in Walters Oklahoma, you're nothing", we in Oklahoma loved hearing such a put down). He was so hard working, so honest and so talented that it was probably his undoing at Texas. The folks down there still talk about how rudely and unfairly he was treated. Kenny Franks and Bob Burke are true Oklahomans, love the state and the people and write many books depicting such. They're good. If you're a fan of Abe Lemons, of basketball, of OKlahoma and just fun and interesting biographies, you'll like this book.
