I'm using "Abriendo paso: gramática" in my AP Spanish class and I really like it. It doesn't use a lot of color or pictures, but that's OK with me. It lays out the grammar rules (in English with sample sentences and translations) and gives exercises to aid in understanding. We're using this book in conjunction with "Una vez más" and I must say they compliment eachother nicely. Abriendo paso describes rules in English and gives translations of example sentences, so it clears up confusion easily. However, there are usually only two or three "ejercisios" per rule. This is where "Una vez más" comes in. It also has a few exercises for each rule, so it's nice to combine the two. However "Una vez más" has no English so it can add to confusion (on the other hand it's good practice!)

Our class used this workbook to review all points of grammar for the AP exam. Our students really enjoyed the exercises (amazing response from high school students!) and found that their written fluency was very well guided and developed along the course of the book. The Paso chapters at the end are very helpful reviews of basic grammer and the mock AP exam sections were good in-class pre-AP tests. Gramática was helpful to our native speaker as well as standard learners. Two thumbs up to José Díaz!!

If you are looking for a source to study for the AP Spanish exam, this book covers writing and grammar skills well. In addition, the speaking portions of the book are based on those used by the AP Spanish exam. I would recommend it to anyone.
