From the award-winning author of Parable of the Sower After the near-extinction of the human race, one young man with extraordinary gifts will reveal whether the human race can learn from its past and rebuild their future . . . or is doomed to self-destruction.In the future, nuclear war has destroyed nearly all humankind. An alien race intervenes, saving the small group of survivors from certain death. But their salvation comes at a cost. The Oankali are able to read and mutate genetic code, and they use these skills for their own survival, interbreeding with new species to constantly adapt and evolve. They value the intelligence they see in humankind but also know that the species-rigidly bound to destructive social hierarchies-is destined for failure. They are determined that the only way forward is for the two races to produce a new hybrid species - and they will not tolerate rebellion. Akin looks like an ordinary human child. But as the first true human-alien hybrid, he is born understanding language, then starts to form sentences at two months old. He can see at a molecular level and kill with a touch. More powerful than any human or Oankali, he will be the architect of both races' future. But before he can carry this new species into the stars, Akin must reconcile with his own heritage in a world already torn in two.
I live for this series. If you find yourself looking for a series you'll be sick to finally finish, start Xenogenesis. There is nothing better than delving into another sci-fi reality. With this book enjoy the imagery that comes along with imagination. 10/10.
Best of the Xenogenesis Series by a Very Narrow Margin

Better than Dawn (Xenogenesis), the first of the series, and slightly better than the finale, Imago (Book Three of the Xenogenesis Series). All 3 are OUTSTANDING. Save money by buying Lilith's Brood, which contains all 3. See "Lilith's Brood" for more about each book. [email protected]
a brilliant sequel

This book is far better than the first in the series. I was completely sucked into the characters, concept, and plot. The device of the alien child - a hybrid that is different from humans in obvious but also extremely subtle ways - is a unique creation in sci fi. His journey is fascinating and cruel, which makes a dark philospical statement on human nature. The dialogue is as excellent as you would expect from any fine novelist.
Wonderful Series! Just Wonderful!

Before I selected an omnibus called Xenogenesis from the Sci Fi Book club (containing: Dawn, Adulthood Rites, and Imago), I had never heard of Octavia Butler.Am I glad I selected this accidentally when I joined the club (Mainly because it said it had three books in it). While most of the free books I received were average to no good, The Xenogenesis Series was exceptionally great!
I simply cound NOT put this book down. So intense!

I enjoy books that make me think. This one did. I have only read 3 of Octavia's books, but they are all dynamite. I rarely read a book through at one sitting, but I raced through all three of the exogenisis series. The many layers of meanings made me think about so many things in the "real" world. These books challenged me in many ways and I am still expanding as a result. Thank you, Octavia!!!!!!!!
Mini series potential!

From the complete novel Xenogenesis Lilith Iyapo has just awakened from a 250 year nap. The Earth she once new no longer exists, destroyed by mankind. A strange new alien world has taken its place. Lilith and the remaining survivors have to make a choice: Live long, sterile, childless lives or breed with an alien race and replenish the Earth. This is a very thought provoking situation in which the life of a race is more important than your own prejudices. Xenogenesis should be required reading. Long life Lilith, where ever you are.
