The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas, is thought by many of its readers to be the greatest novel ever written. This book revisits Dumas' story from the viewpoint of one of the minor characters, who revisits and retells the story many years later after the principal characters are all deceased. But the retelling is more than a plot summary. Although nothing in this history is inconsistent with Dumas' story, the novel brings an entirely new perspective to the events described by Dumas and also adds details that shed new light on the story. Most significantly, this account continues the story after the end of Dumas' novel. Indeed, many of the characters of Dumas' original story become reunited in surprising ways and we learn more about the later lives of Mercedes and Edmond, Valentine and Maximilian, Ali and Haidee, and even of Danglars and Villefort. This book is intended both for those who have no previous knowledge of Dumas' novel and for those who are quite familiar with it.
