Born on May 8, 1953, in Amsterdam, Alexander Arthur Van Halen, better known as Alex Van Halen, grew up surrounded by music. The son of Jan van Halen, a talented jazz saxophonist and clarinetist, and Eugenia van Beers, an Indo woman from the Dutch East Indies, Alex's early years were steeped in rich cultural influences. His family lived in Nijmegen, in the Netherlands, before moving to Pasadena, California, in 1962, where Alex and his younger brother Eddie became naturalized U.S. citizens.
Both brothers were classically trained pianists, but Alex's musical journey took an unexpected turn when he picked up Eddie's drum kit. What began as casual practice soon turned into a passion, and by the time he mastered the drum solo from The Surfaris' "Wipe Out," it was clear that drumming was his true calling. Eddie, recognizing his brother's talent, switched from drums to guitar, setting the stage for one of the most legendary partnerships in rock history.
