Practical advice from two NOLS instructors on all aspects of backcountry skiing and winter camping. As skiers venture farther from lift-served front country, they need to understand and avoid hazards such as avalanches and extreme cold. This book teaches skiers how to choose the right equipment, stay safe, and have fun while minimizing their impact on the wilderness. Hundreds of entertaining but very practical illustrations by rekowned illustrator Mike Clelland.
I read this because I wanted to learn how to survive and thrive should I ever find myself overnight in the snow. As always, the authors deliver sound advice gleened from their experience, and make you laugh all the way through with the funny illustrations. I appreciate the absence of machismo and political soap-boxing sometimes found in wilderness books, while reminding the reader to respect nature and be responisble. What's neat about this book is the detailed instructions on how to do things. I don't ski the backcountry, but I spend a lot of time in the mountains and this books has great advice for anybody. My husband bought me these books to get me interested in backpacking, and it worked. 'Nuff said.
Funny and Informative!

The clever humor aside, this book has everything I needed to know before entering the back country. I highly recommend it.
Useful even if you don't ski.

There are many tips in this book that may be of value for winter camping even if you do not ski to get there. The information is presented in an easy to retain manner with humor and cartoons. I may even try to ski one day.
Cool book on cool weather camping

Well, I just panned a different book and said don't waste your money so now its time to even the score. This book is great fun. I have lots of winter camping books and do a fair amount of winter camping. Other books may have more information, but none covers all of the basics with as much humor as this one. I do alpine skiing and snowshoeing so the coverage of tele skiing wasn't of particular interest...but I still really enjoyed reading those sections, too.It is hard to describe the authors' irreverent approach while dealing with serious (life and death) topics, but they somehow pull it off. This is really a great book to engage someone who isn't already a hard-core winter camper...so if you are, buy it for your significant other (assuming you haven't been able to get them enthused about spending a winter weekend outdoors.) If they don't enjoy this book, you may officially give up on them.
Not Fair!!

I've been a back-country skier for almost 20 years now. My first reaction to this book was that it's NOT FAIR that rookie snow campers can now easily know all of the tricks that I had to learn the hard way. All those cold nights, hands, and ***** wasted!! Where was this book when I was learning? It makes it too easy! My second reaction was to some of the neat tricks I hadn't learned ....until now. Highly recommended - grudgingly!
