Meet Jack. He's almost six years old. And that's almost grown up. After all, he can almost ride a big bike just like his older brother. And he almost never gets scared. This spunky little almost-six-year-old is ready to take on the world. Well, almost. Richard Torrey's sweetly funny tale is sure to resonate with any child who just can't wait to be big.
This is a great book for early readers. The illustrations are beautiful and the story is uplifting. I've bought multiple copies for my younger nieces and nephews and for my friends' kids. The author has other books out there that are also fun reading including the Beans Baker series. All good stuff!

A book about growing up

Reviewed by Cayden (age 4 1/2) and Max (age 2 1/2) Aures and Mom for Reader Views (5/09) "Almost" is the tale of a little boy named Jack who is "almost six." He "can almost wear big clothes" and "almost ride a big bike" among other things. Cayden: "The cover is kind of like Max trying to reach things that he can't get. I can almost ride a big bike like Jack can almost ride a big bike. I still need my training wheels though. I liked the robot that he made out of the vacuum cleaner. That was cool!" Max: "That boy has a big brother like I do! He falls down and gets hurt like me. He puts lots of bubbles in his tub." Parent's comments: I think that any child would be able to relate to this book. When they are growing up, there is always something that they aren't quite able to do yet. They always seem to want to be more grown up than they are. Both of my children found certain examples throughout the story that they could identify with. "Almost" by Richard Torrey is a great book to show kids that they are not the only ones who are so close to doing certain things but just not completely at that point yet.

"Almost" is a perfect book describing what a child feels when he wants to do bigger things and cannot, but realizing that the end is in sight, fights on to try. The illustrations are wonderful, perfect for the child and adult mind, (as I understand being an adult who will never really grow up) and such a warm family feeling about the book with mother and siblings involved. IT says it all. We have all been "Almost" the next age as a child and can identify with the simplicity and depth of this wondeful book.
