This book was written so well that you could almost taste and smell Amans surroundings. Aman is an amazing peek into the lives of Somali women.

I began reading this book for a research project and became enraptured. It will transport you to the time and place Aman speaks of. Not only did i fall in love with her story and the charaters in the story, but two years later, many of the historical facts and truths of somalia have really stuck with me. Poignant and at times painful, this book is unforgatable and enlightening.

A fascinating biography of a Somali woman. A must for anyone who is interested in women in Africa, for the story is not Aman's alone, but that of her grandmother, her mother, and her siblings.

As I said in my summary this story lacks the realty for the life of millions of somali womans, It is a baseless story which I believe made up by this girl and those who help her writing this book.

I read the book a few years ago while Somali refugees started coming to my country, Finland. I found the people and their traditions in the book quite male centered - but at the same time it helped me to understand Somali people's difficulties to adapt to a totally different society in a Nordic Democracy where family ties have no economic meaning because welfare society subtitutes for them.
