The US Army during the Civil War was the largest the country had raised in its brief history; and it would remain the largest ever raised until World War I. In all, 2,772,408 men served in some branch or other of the US Army. This detailed work by Philip Katcher is a comprehensive guide to the uniforms, accoutrements, insignia and weapons of the Union Troops who fought the American Civil War (1861-1865), with a wealth of illustrations, including contemporary photographs and eight full page colour plates by Ron Volstad.
This book provides information for reenactors, people that paint toy soldiers, and people that love to read. I enjoyed this book a lot. When I got it, I began to look it over from front to back. This series of books is a must for Civil War buffs. I've looked at other books in this series and I loved them too! This book shows color pictures of uniforms and soldiers. It also has black and white photographs of guns, cap pouches, cartridge boxes, haversacks, and jackets. Again, i thought that this book was GREAT!!
Must Have Resource for Re-enactors and Scale Modelers

This little book is an invaluable reference for the re-enactor and the newly emerging 1/6th scale modeler. "American Civil War Armies: Confedrate Troops" is a first rate example from the Osprey Series. The Osprey Companion Series (Men-At Arms, Warrior, New Vanguard, Campaign, and Elite), is simply a staple for basic information on military uniforms and equipment. By no means exhaustive, they provide enough clearly outlined and well illustrated information to create quality reproductions of classic military uniforms and equipment. The illustrations are rich and colorful, and really bring those uniforms to life like photographs simply cannot. And even if you are not a modeler or re-enactor, the history buff will benefit from reading the books in this series, as one cannot really get a clear picture of military history without understanding the conditions under which soldiers lived and fought. The uniforms and equipment they used are the basics of that understanding.
