An American Federation of Teachers Bibliography

Since its foundation in 1916 the American Federation of Teachers has been vital in the development of American education. Its contribution to better salaries, professional recognition for teachers, and improved schools has been immeasurable. AFT members have spoken out on a wide range of educational issues, and the union itself has taken strong positions on social, political, and economic policy. In 1969 the AFT designated the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs at Wayne State University, one of the nation's finest research collections on education, unionization in education, and related topics, as its official depository. A wide selection of articles, books, and pamphlets on AFT unionism is found in this bibliography, covering the years 1916-1979. AFT documents, reports and position papers, dissertations and theses, and manuscript collections are also cited for the interested researcher. The Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs, Wayne State University, was founded in 1960 to collect, preserve, and make available original materials pertaining to the American labor movement, twentieth-century urban America, and related social and economic reform movements. Over 40,000 linear feet of correspondence, minutes, proceedings, newspapers, photographs, tape recordings, personal papers of members, and other items have been gathered from major unions in the United States, making the Archives one of the finest research collections on labor history in the world.
