Between the years of 1969 to 1998, over 3,600 people died in Northern Ireland in the struggle between Catholics and Protestants. From a historical perspective, "The Troubles" had its beginnings during the reign of Henry VIII, not long after he declared himself head of the Church of England. Fearing the use of Ireland as a stepping stone to mount an invasion of England, Protestants were encouraged to immigrate to the island. Immediately, conflict arose between the new settlers and the Catholic inhabitants. The conflict continued in one form or another until it reached a climax following the Civil Rights Movement of 1969. For the next thirty years, Northern Ireland experienced shootings, bombings, murder, and destruction unlike anything seen before.
