For courses in Architectural Desktop (ADT). David Madsen takes his best-selling comprehensive, easy-to-use and understandable AutoCAD format and applies it to Architectural Desktop to aid students... This description may be from another edition of this product.
This book provides comprehensive coverage of Autodesk's Architectural Desktop. This is the best book I have found for Architectural Desktop training. The text provides you with easy to read and follow tools and commands needed to create complete sets of construction documents for residential and commercial applications. Screen displays and illustrations accompanying the discussion of every topic clearly demonstrate the commands and topics. Exercises are provided throughout and allow you to practice what you are learning. Each chapter has questions that give you an opportunity to review what you have learned. Learning objectives begin each chapter. There is a great feature called Field Notes that give a variety of professional tips, advanced applications, and additional instruction throughout the book. The projects provided on CD are difficult to read, but the in-text exercises are enough to learn Architectural Desktop.

Forget my previous comments of yesterday made in a fit of frustration. I have discovered that the .dwg files used during the exercises are in fact created by yourself as you go through the book. Duh. The PDF files are useful in their own right. It's a good book! Now where was I... Chapter 2

Architectural Desktop 3.0/3.3 is an extremely productive CAD program. It is comprehensive, complex, and requires substantial learning effort in order to employ its capabilities. Architects and others who participate in creating buildings will see their work hours multiplied when they become comfortable using the program. Automation of routines and organization of office standards is easily accomplished and once completed allows an architect to focus on creativity. I believe many resources must be used to become productive with ADT 3. "Architectural Desktop 3.0/3.3" by David Madsen and Ron Palma is a very valuable resource for learning and for reference. By use of practical example the authors are able clarify how we can put the power of this program to good use. And by virtue of the book's organization, the program's capabilities, complex settings and routines, and examples of use, can be located easily.I am personally very particular about the way my drawings communicate my designs to the builders. "Display Representations", for example, allow the use specified line weights and option to leave out detail elements that may cause confusion. Yet, another view and scale of the building model may require those detail elements to be shown, and line weights modified. As I understand and adjust this type of feature, I set the program to produce my drawing style, without intervention, for all future use. This particular feature of the program is extremely comprehensive and requires well illustrated "screen shots" for explanation, which the book uses extensively and effectively.I recommend this book by Madsen and Palma. The small investment will leverage the larger investment in CAD production.
