This is a big, luscious read of a soapie and, if you're in the mood for just such a read, this fills the bill perfectly. Claire Drummond, a magnificently beautiful, aristocratic Scottish daughter of an old, wealthy and respected family, begins to work for an American multi billionaire as a social secretary, in London, to introduce him to all the "right" people and to increase his business connections in Europe. Claire is in the process of recovering from a disastrous marriage to Lord Rory Ballater, a scoundrel and a rake who is well known for his profligate ways, even among the upper classes . Rory proved to be a drug ridden near-madman who subjected his innocent young wife to beatings and sexual depravities and who delighted in her humiliation. When Claire threatened to disclose his drug smuggling activities to the authorities, Rory methodically drugged her and planned to shut her up in a home for the mentally incompetent. Luckily, Claire's mother rescued her in time and helped her to divorce Rory and to rebuild her life...and this is only the first part of the book !!! The second half is just as thrilling, with Claire and her new boss falling for each other and having to thwart the evil plans of Rory, once again. The story is filled with descriptions of superb clothes, jewels, houses and places and is a great big super soapie..wonderful for a big read when the mood for lavish living comes upon you.
