Sssweet ssswampland! Ex-pets Bartleby, a red-eared turtle, and Seezer, an alligator, have traveled together all the way from New York to their true home in the bayou country of the Mighty Mississippi. But when they reach the watery haven where Seezer was born, the gruff but good-hearted alligator's family seems to have disappeared. So have all the red-eared turtles. Instead, the swamp is occupied by Old Stump, a greedy giant of a gator, and his pack of snarling guard gators. Even worse, Old Stump wants to make Bartleby his next snack! Luckily, underneath Bartleby's shell lie a brave heart, a knack for making friends, and unwavering determination. And it's a good thing, because bayou country is full of danger, including an otter who loves to eat things in shells and a chef with a yen for turtles. Worst of all, now that he's back home, Seezer is becoming sssecretive and sssneaky. Though new supporters like Quickfoot, Grub, and Lucky Gal are trying to help Bartleby learn the ways of the bayou, it's a struggle for the resilient red-ear. Will he always feel like an outsider? This page-turning sequel to Bartleby of the Mighty Mississippi explores what it takes to make a new place home. Book jacket.
After reading Bartleby of the Mighty Mississippi to my 4 and 5 year old sons, they were begging for more. They loved Shalant's next book Bartleby of the Big Bad Bayou. Each night I would read one of the short chapters to them and they would beg for me to read another. The book was suspensful for my boys and they are wishing Shalant had Bartleby traveling to another spot in a third book. I highly reccomend these books for any young boy who loves to read or be read to.
