Pimsleur Greek (Modern) Basic Course - Level 1 Lessons 1-10 CD: Learn to Speak and Understand Modern Greek with Pimsleur Language Programs

It took me ten days to study this set of audio CDs. The lessons were never boring or too hard to follow. Forgive me if I say that my confidence in what I learned was such that I went all around my area searching for a Greek speaking soul. When I met Yiorgo, he was no match... lol, he was born in the USA. Maria could not believe that some audio files could give me the fluency and the close-to-native accent I had. The Pimsleur Method is the best I know so far. I quickly purchased a second set for my sister in Haiti. In about two weeks she and her husband called me speaking Greek. My conclusion is: if we did it, you can too; maybe faster and better.

This CD set had me speaking conversational Greek after the first 30 minutes. Awesome!

A wry look at Greece from the standpoint of learning Greek, the title expresses a sentiment familiar to anyone using a phrase book or engaged in more serious study. Based on his column in the Athens News, I found the book very amusing and a good holiday read, however it's necessary to have at least a learner's understanding of Greek to appreciate it.

If you want to study any language on your own, you must start with Pimsleur. I have studied several languages and have found that starting with Pimsleur is the most effective way. The most important thing in learning a language is being able to pronounce correctly. By being able to know how to speak the language, you can easily remember new words. Pimsleur is the only program that does that. It teaches you words an expressions slowly and repetitively. listen, repeat, listen, repeat. teach, test, teach, test. On the basic Greek, there are only 5 hours of lessons, so if you really want to learn the language, you need to also buy another series. Buy Pimsleur and another series like Teach Yourself Greek. Pimsleur gives you confidence. After one lesson you can say 'how are you?' 'I can understand a little Greek' and you are able to say it quickly and fluently. One major problem, though, with Pimsleur is that the words and expressions they teach you are way too formal. However, it still gives you a start. You can eventually move onto the more informal words. At least, you have picked up the general pronunciation and the rhythm of the language. I've tried many other language programs (they all go too fast) and none do the job as well as Pimsleur - especially for the not so commonly studied languages like Greek, Thai, Indonesian.
