I've decided, with proper thought as I consulted my shelf housing only The Batman and Gotham, that his painted Batman (in this) is unequivocally my favorite! Paul Pope has the best design but I wouldn't want it painted- it's too perfect with his tools.
I am a HUGE fan of Wagner if you discount that boorish ponce Gren-Dilettante but his story had too many flaws. I always grant History's Greatest Detective absurd instinct but on top of the heap of that were coincidences that made me groan and situations that only make sense to "capes and tights" readers. Obviously The Batman, while having a cape and tight fatigues, does not belong with that crowd because they both have practical use and he's a man of skills that are all technically achievable.
Matt does moralistic stories well and I must concede that he succeeded, with flair, in portraying his chosen treatment with the utmost quality of character and dialog.
