I was pleased to see this. A football book that tried to be a bit more analytical, and take a basic look at some actual statistical analysis of the teams and players in English soccer, from generally available numbers of the most basic kind that are about all you get in the soccer realm. A promising beginning.
Statistician's guide to European Football

The latest edition of this BBC annual does not disappoint. Packed with team and player statistics of all the English leagues, plus similar statistics for all the major European leagues (Serie A, Spanish Primera Lega, Bundesliga, and even tournaments like the Champions League). The book most heavily covers all the English leagues, which constitute about half the book. But the top leagues across Europe are also well represented. They use their own rating system for players at various positions on the pitch. And while they don't always lead to the more obvious conclusions about the best players (for example, midfielders are rated by a system not unlike NHL's plus-minus ratings), they at least identify the facts to back up their assertions.Great for following star and even more obscure players in the major European football leagues.
