If you are a fan of James Herriott, you should also read this book. It's a marvelous account of a young man's struggle to run a small farm in England back in (I think) the 40's or early 50's. Creaton paints a hilarious picture of the colorful characters on his farm: from the crude yet funny young farm hands, to his quince jelly making Mother (who never tells anyone that the delectable quinces she uses just happen to be growing over an outdoor privy), to Creaton's eventual girlfriend - a rat-killing land girl. This book is great fun, and I recommend searching it out.
