worthwhile meditations

In "Between Friends" twenty women writers, including Jane Smiley, Wendy Wasserstein, Joyce Carol Oates and Phyllis Rose, explore the meaning of friendship in their lives. In "Cathy, Now and Then," Jill MCCorkle examines her lifelong relationship with a close, irrepressible gal pal. In "Can Writers Have Friends," Jane Smiley explores the conflicts that arise when a writer uses his friends in literature. In "Best Friend, My Wellspring in the Wilderness!" Carolyn See describes her impoverished girlhood and the friend who helped her survive. Friends both old and new, lost and found, silver and gold are all on display here.

Insightful, heartfelt, and just beautiful

This is an outstanding collection of essays on friendship, written by women writers. It could be argued that the works are more on women friendships, since it is women who are writing them about their female best/close friends (in most cases). However, it could often be extrapolated to all friendships in general because some things in friendships are universal. Still, to convey such heartfelt topics is difficult, but these are writers who are masters at the craft, and they have done a fabulous job to give diversity and depth to the matter. The writing styles and topics chosen among the essays are as diverse as the many forms friendships can take, and none hold back anything, digging from the depths of their hearts to show the reader what lies at the core. Given all that, I wonder why nobody's read this book to review it as I am the first reader to do so here at the time of this review.
