Magazines such as Time and Newsweek have described parents as living in "mayhem" and "madness" with their out-of-control, undisciplined children. How did our families get to this state? To child psychologist Dr. Beth A. Grosshans, a half-century of parenting advice-with its time-outs-is largely to blame. Her ideas challenge this prevailing culture, proving that power and authority are as essential as love and good intentions to effective parenting. Akin to a private session with Dr. Grosshans, Beyond Time-Out enables parents to reflect upon their own behavior and readjust an unbalanced family structure.
Finally someone has addressed a growing problem! This book is different than anything you have read! Dr Grosshands explains why there is a problem with child and parental behavior and gives SPECIFIC advise about what to do about it with specific tools. How I wish I had this book 30 years ago! Child and Parent behavior has only gotten worse since then. EVERY parent should read this book!!
A Terrific Read on "Parenting"
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 16 years ago
I am a grandmother of the "old school" of child-rearing (i.e. before the baby-boomer generation!) I have two children in their early forties who have 5 daughters between them. Some of my granddaughters have had behavioral issues which involved both going to bed and in whose bed they would sleep,(i.e., their bed or their parent's!) This "problem with sleeping" led ME to purchase this excellent book on parenting, although the sleeping issues seem to have resolved themselves... I read the book from cover to cover learning how to approach several issues involving today's young children. The interesting and very well-documented behavioral problems stem from the "imbalance of family power" (IFP), an issue many families face today because their children are "running the household" and the parents have lost complete control of their lives due to the amount of time they spend trying to discipline their children, both inside the house and out in public. The authors reveal a step-by-step procedure to "cure" this IFP called "The Ladder". Some of the many "issues" written about are: eating problems, toileting problems and discipline problems. The book is exceedingly well written and is a MUST for parents (both couples and single parents) who are concerned about their children's behavior and how it affects the parents' lives as well as their children's.
Excellent child-rearing advice for all parents

As a pediatrician, I found "Beyond Time-Out" to be an extremely well-written and insightful guide to child-rearing. Its particular emphasis on providing appropriate discipline while still communicating unconditional love - a crucial but very difficult balance for many families to achieve - will be of great benefit to parents and their children alike.
An Absolute Must Read
