A fascinating view of English history through the story of one house

A thoroughly engrossing story, one that I've come back to time and time again..... a great book to curl up with on a winters night. It took me a while to realise that the genetic output of both the original owner and his friend Jonathan continue to pop up and take ownership of the house, due in part to a couple of "wrong side of the blanket" babies in the first few chapters. Full of wonderful characters from all aspects of the social scale, in different eras, Norah Lofts has a wonderful command of her people and their lives.

I cannot understand why more of this prolific author's stories aren't reprinted-for sheer storytelling and charachters that are true to life, Norah Lofts is timeless. Bless This House is the chronicle of several generations of households witnessed by an English home from the time it was built through the past century.I believe that this book, and Gad's Hall, another of the author's stories, to be some of the best social commentaries true to their times. Engrossing on a cold winter's eve!

the history of a an English house, and its inhabitants/owners, over a period of several centuries. Amazing, and one could believe that a similar house's history could be true, from the original construction eons ago to a surprising ending as its owners travel ful circle in time.
