First this isn't an ID guide and no one should approach it as such. Books for the purposes of identification abound. The Blue Book assumes you have ID'ed your doll. Second, this is a guide and more importantly it is a HISTORY of values (prices paid at shows, auctions, etc.) since the last one was published. The market has a way of fluctuating and the book is not gospel, just a guide. If you're buying, you can expect to pay more or less than the book indicates. Keep that history part in mind...! If you're selling... well, these are "retail" prices by-in-large. Selling to a dealer will never net you retail. The Blue Book is still the best of its sort around!
A good supplement

This book is certainly helpful--lots of color photos and information on the makers markings and where to find them. However, this would only be a supplement to a much larger library for the doll collector. I thought it could benefit from more detailed descriptions and tips on collecting and spotting a "fake."

This is a great book with basic information on dolls. Another great book is Composition and Wood Dolls & Toys by Michele Karl. You should check that out too.
A Price Guide That Goes Up In Value Itself!!

Where else have you seen a Price Guide that goes up in value!! For years the most quoted price guide on dolls; this pocket sized value guide has now expanded to include not only antique bisque dolls but also the "vintage" composition and hard plastic dolls of the 40's and 50's and even some current artist dolls. Barbie is even there!!Guidelines are listed on how to properly use this book. It explains that no price guide is the final price...sometimes price just depends...depends on area, condition, originality and popularity! Those who take the extra time to read the book's preface will learn what extra things to watch for in selecting a doll for a lasting collection.Dolls pictured are clean; photos are closeups; and where possible the costume are original.The small font size selected for the index, however, is very difficult for an older clientele to read.
