In the early morning hours, a gunshot echoes across the quiet community of Valdosta, Georgia. A professor, known for his extensive studies of the Okefenokee Swamp, is gunned down in the lighted vestibule of his home. Students and citizens fear a murderer is walking among them. Windows are slammed shut and deadbolts secure doors in thousands of homes. Among the shocked citizens is Valdosta State University baseball Coach Chad Harrington, a neighbor of the murder victim. Seeing the investigation is going nowhere, the coach calls on his former star shortstop, Matthew Brownlee, to help him shore up his struggling infield and do some sleuthing into the professor's shocking demise. Brownlee, a former Army Ranger, helped solve a twenty-five-year-old cold case in Ohio with the help of his sister, Betsy. The siblings agree to work in tandem as advisors to the men's and women's ball clubs while tiptoeing through the circumstances of the shocking homicide. The Brownlees discover more than error-infested infield play. A quagmire of innuendo that points to a conspiracy to safeguard the university's integrity amidst serious allegations of misconduct, neglect, hazing, molestation and finally murder. Will they be able to unmask the killer, though?
