Dozens of two-color drawings and full-color photographs highlight an authoritative handbook on the ancient Asian art of bonsai, offering tips on selecting bonsai, care and maintenance routines,... This description may be from another edition of this product.
Being an avid bonsai lover, I bought this books a few years ago to get an overview of the art of Bonsai. Now, a few years later and a few trees dead, I've found this book to be an inspiring pictorial of some of the Brooklyn Botanical Garden's most beautiful specimens, but lacking in detail. While I'm not an expert in Bonsai, and I'm a bit more learned now, I find that the author either skipped some basic preliminary steps, or wrote in vague non-descript terms that left me, the reader, looking for more (ie: moss and ground cover... need more details). But, just for the pictures alone, this book deserves 4 stars because it has started my own imagination going and given me some guidance and ideas on designs and styles I'd like to use on my Bonsais. While no book will ever be completely comprehensive of all there is to know about Bonsai, this book would make a great gift for someone toying with the idea of buying or creating a tree, and does give enough information for someone to start out small. Overall, its a pleasure to read and after reading the book, stop on by Brooklyn's Bonsai garden for a real show-stopper!
