Book Overview

Sophie Lawson should be enjoying her sister's wedding day. But nothing could have prepared her to see the best man again.

After her mother became bedridden and her father bailed on the family, Sophie found herself serving as a second mother to her twin brother, Seth, and younger sister, Jenna. Sophie supported her siblings through their college years, putting aside her own dream of opening a bookshop in Piper's Cove--the quaint North Carolina beach town they frequented as children.

Now it's finally time for Sophie to follow her own pursuits. Seth has a new job, and Jenna is set to marry her college beau in Piper's Cove. But the destination wedding reunites Sophie with best man Aiden Maddox, her high school sweetheart who left her without a backward glance.

When an advancing hurricane strands Aiden in Piper's Cove after the wedding, he finds the hotels booked to capacity and has to ask Sophie to put him up until the storm passes. As the two ride out the weather, old feelings rise to the surface. The delay also leaves Sophie with mere days to get her bookshop up and running. Can she trust Aiden to stick around? And will he find the courage to risk his heart?

delightful

"Having a few walls to guard herself was perfectly acceptable as long as there was an operable doorway." I loved being in Piper's Cove, NC and never wanted to leave. Denise Hunter always brings her readers delightful, heart-tugging, deliciously romantic, thoroughly redemptive stories and this book is no exception. Aiden and Sophie are wonderful, even with their insecurities, fears, and doubts. They have a history and it was so much fun to see their past, present, and future mingle as forgiveness triumphs and second chances take front stage. Sophie's newly opened bookshop and her love for books set a great backdrop to the story. Cameo appearance from Bluebell Inn series characters was the icing on top. I hope I run into Aiden and Sophie again in future books! I received the book from Thomas Nelson via NetGalley and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are solely my own.

Sweet Second Chance Romance

I enjoyed Bookshop by the Sea. It's a good, clean second chance romance that had me pulling for the characters throughout. I liked Sophie Lawson and Aiden Maddox, and wanted things to turn out well for them. They both had growing to do, and that aspect of the story moved at a good, steady pace. I think there's a good lesson about selflessness in this book: How easy it is for truly selfless people to be taken advantage of, and the importance of guarding against that. I also think we can learn a lot about trust from Aiden, especially. There were several moments in the book where I could feel the sadness of the moment, which indicates I was emotionally involved in the story. There's a spiritual element running through the story that I particularly liked. Overall, I think you'll find Bookshop by the Sea satisfying, and you'll love the setting. I received a complimentary copy of this book through Netgalley, but I'll be purchasing a copy to add to my ever-growing Denise Hunter collection. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
