When newcomer Mercy Windsor arrives in Mercy Peak in 1948 after a scandal shatters her gilded world as Hollywood's beloved leading lady, she is determined to forge a new life in obscurity in this time-forgotten Colorado haven. She purchases Wildwood--an abandoned estate with a haunting history--and begins to restore it to its former glory.
But as she does, her every move tugs at the threads of that mountain's lore, unearthing what became of her long-lost pen pal, Rusty Bright, and the whereabouts of the infamous Galloping Goose Engine No. 8, which vanished years ago, along with the mailbag it carried, whose contents could change the course of countless lives. Not to mention another fabled treasure that--if found--could right so many wrongs.
Among the towering mountains that stand as silent witnesses, the ghosts of the past entangle with the courage of the present to find a place where healing, friendship, and hope can abide amid a world forever changed.
"I sometimes think, when our dreams seem impossible to us, perhaps we just haven't seen yet how God will chase after our hearts with those very dreams, in the unlikeliest ways."
I was completely blown away by the musical quality of the author's voice. It was the first full-length novel by the author I read and I cannot believe I've waited this long to read this acclaimed author. And, yes, she deserves all the accolades and then some. It's a beautiful, heart-breaking, soul-aching, redemptive story of friendship, grief, loss, vulnerability, belonging, freedom, and hope. There is fantastic banter, raw emotions, and amazing treasure hunt wrapped in mystery to boot. The narrative uses flashbacks, letters, newspaper headlines, a play script, and research for a biography as well as traditional third person narrative to create wonderful depth and breadth.
I loved that the book started out with four friends making a pact and ended with two friends staying loyal and true. I loved their faithful, eccentric, and loving mountain community and their beloved train with nostalgic memories. A dash of Hollywood thrown into the story was fun but also eye-opening. There was even some tender steadfast romantic love in the plot which was so sweet and satisfying.
I can't recommend this book highly enough. It's one of the best reads of 2024. It will make you cry, laugh, swoon, think, and pray. It will make you contemplate "how extravagant a kindness this world is".

Storytelling Excellence
Published by Lucy , 7 months ago
Can I just say WOW! There should be a special button to push for amazing content in a book. Therefore I’ll just say gobsmacking excellent. The cover is stunning, the words poetic and beautiful, the characters make you want to pack your bags and be their neighbors and friends, and the storytelling is spot on. Yes, I said storytelling as this author is a standout at making you feel like you are sitting on the back porch listening with the family to one of the most unbelievable beautiful stories you have ever heard. It draws you into their world and makes you wish you had that penpal to see you through the difficult times growing up. The letters were an ingenious part of the story and I could just picture those young girls pouring their hearts out to each other across the miles and how those letters strengthened and encourage the other. I loved the mystery surrounding the story that is uncovered piece by piece to reveal hope and healing to the townspeople. A wonderful story of friendship, forgiveness, healing, hope, & townspeople that feel like family. You will be engrossed from the beginning and want to devour it but slowing down and savoring these words as they seep into your heart was more important to me, as I didn’t want it to end. Definitely on my top ten reads this year. Inspiring and hits all the right notes as it sings and resonates into your heart. Highly recommend you not missing out on reading.
I received a complimentary copy from the author/publisher. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.
