The LDS Church prohibited black members from temple ceremonies or being ordained until June 9, 1978 when a revelation was announced rescinding the ban. Joseph Freeman was the first black man ordained to the priesthood and was sealed to his wife just a few weeks later. He became an instant celebrity, appearing on ABC television's "Good Morning America" program, and was a frequent guest speaker.
